Watching Television

However familiar an object in our contemporary lifestyle television remains, it is a discreetly powerful form of consumption. These photographs are a reaction to the overwhelming presence of television. I began photographing people watching TV in their domestic environments to promote conversation and awareness about the activity. This is an ongoing project and I hope to photograph a sample of the American population watching television. The act of watching TV is often named relaxing, amusing, informative, or distracting. I find TV frightening because it reduces communication between people. I am especially interested in the disappearance of correspondence in the written word in our culture. The majority of entertainment is through the moving image as opposed to reading and writing. A hundred years ago, James Joyce said the photograph is a rival of the world. Now the photograph is a mere ancestor of something next constant. Photography has a responsibility to watch television; to slow down our environments and catch the way they make us feel and look.
